Introducing the SRF5030T Near Field Probe Kit

The SRF5030T near field probe set, including magnetic (H) and electric (E) field probes, is used for pre-compliance EMC measurements. These probes identify potential interference sources in electronic assemblies. Like wide bandwidth antennas, they detect emissions from various components and can pinpoint emission sources when connected to a spectrum analyzer. They can conduct RF immunity tests, assist in repair or debugging by measuring RF signal levels, and non-invasively measure RF building blocks such as modulators or oscillators.

SRF5030T Near Field Probe Kit Features:

Four Probes: Includes 1 E-field and 3 H-field probes for comprehensive testing.

Wide Frequency Range: Covers 300 kHz-3GHz, can be used well beyond 6 GHz

Resolution: 5mm, 10mm, 20mm

Distinguished within 10 cm range of the magnetic field

Insensitive to the human hand with shielded loops to avoid picking up common mode noise

SMB connector to avoid twisting the RF cable when scanning DUTs

Importance of EMI Measurement Kits for Spectrum Analyzers

Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) measurement kits are crucial for spectrum analyzers because they enable the detection, identification, and analysis of unwanted electromagnetic emissions that can cause interference with electronic devices and systems. Here’s why they are important:

Compliance Testing

Regulatory Requirements:

Many industries must comply with stringent electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) regulations to ensure their products do not emit excessive electromagnetic interference. EMI measurement kits help manufacturers test their products against these standards.

Pre-Compliance Testing:

Before a product goes through formal certification, EMI measurement kits allow for pre-compliance testing to identify and mitigate potential EMI issues, saving time and resources in the long run.

Interference Detection

Troubleshooting:

EMI measurement kits help in identifying sources of electromagnetic interference within a device or system, enabling engineers to troubleshoot and resolve issues effectively.

Quality Assurance:

Ensuring that devices do not emit or are not susceptible to EMI is critical for maintaining product quality and reliability.

Design Validation

Prototyping and Development

During the design phase, engineers use EMI measurement kits to test and validate their designs, ensuring that EMI levels are within acceptable limits.

Component Testing:

Individual components can be tested for EMI to ensure they do not contribute to overall system interference.

Applications with Near Field Probe Kits

When used together with near field probe kits, EMI measurement kits and spectrum analyzers can perform a variety of important applications:

Source Localization:

  • Pinpointing EMI Sources: Near field probes can be used to scan circuit boards and components to locate the exact source of unwanted emissions. This is essential for mitigating EMI at its origin.
  • Detailed Analysis: By using different probes, engineers can analyze emissions from specific areas or components, providing a detailed understanding of where and why emissions occur.

Component and PCB Testing:

  • Surface Scanning: Near field probes can scan the surface of a PCB or individual components to identify areas emitting high levels of EMI.
  • Design Iteration: This allows for iterative design improvements, where engineers can make adjustments and retest to ensure emissions are reduced.

EMI Mitigation:

  • Effective Shielding: Near field probes help in testing the effectiveness of shielding efforts and other EMI mitigation techniques.
  • Filter Design: Engineers can design and test filters to reduce EMI, ensuring that these filters effectively target the identified sources of interference.

Field Testing and Maintenance

  • On-Site Diagnostics: Near field probes are portable and can be used in the field to diagnose EMI issues in installed systems and equipment, making them valuable for maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Repair and Debugging: In repair scenarios, near field probes help technicians identify faulty components or sections of a circuit that may be causing EMI issues.

Non-Invasive Testing:

  • Contactless Measurements: Near field probes allow for non-invasive testing of RF signal levels, making it possible to measure emissions without physically altering or damaging the device under test.
  • Sensitive Areas: This is particularly useful in sensitive areas of a circuit where direct probing might be impractical or risky.
